Quake II on the PlayStation 1 is an incredible port. Here is why.
Quake II on the original Sony PlayStation 1 is a port that really shouldn't have been possible, yet the team at Hammerhead Studios, skilled with their experience building 3D Worlds on the PlayStation make it possible with a very impressive port that takes full advantage of PS1 hardware. The result? A wonderfully executed game that is arguably the best FPS on the PS1. In today's episode we deep dive as to what make the game so great. Please enjoy.

Quake Review - The Impossible Saturn Port?
*Recommended you turn up your brightness on your phone or tablet!
In 1997, Lobotomy Software gave us two premier first person shooters. While Duke Nukem 3D was impressive in its own right, Quake was something special for the simple fact it existed at all.

Quake is important. So, in this video we are going to look at the best ways to play quake 1, the mission packs, and I'll show you how to put the music back in... why the hell is the music missing anyway? We'll add in that NIN goodness. Beyond that, I show you how to install community content, mods, maps, etc.

A Subjective Look at Quake Source Ports
This video is my take on some of the source ports that both fans and developers alike have made for Quake. Like Doom, Quake has a long history with source ports, due to the source code being released almost 20 years ago as of this video's recording.
I have some time codes for segments of certain source ports if you want to skip to them:

Episode Notes:
1. Captured on real hardware.
2. Quake for Saturn had no Japanese release.
3. Crave Entertainment put Lobotomy Software on a gambling game after acquisition. They worked on it nearly a year before being closed down.
4. Lobotomy started much of the work to port Quake to the Playstation, but could not find a publisher to help with the project.
5. Quake was also to the N64, where frankly, I thought it looked and played worse.
6. This episode originally was longer with a music section. All of Quake's music is copyright protected content, however, so I had to cut it. This is also why there is Powerslave music in places.
7. The darkness of this game really had an impact on creating it. I adjusted the brightness where I could, but this game really is dark no matter what you do.

Quake is important. So, in this video we are going to look at the best ways to play quake 1, the mission packs, and I'll show you how to put the music back in... why the hell is the music missing anyway? We'll add in that NIN goodness. Beyond that, I show you how to install community content, mods, maps, etc.

This video is my take on some of the source ports that both fans and developers alike have made for Quake. Like Doom, Quake has a long history with source ports, due to the source code being released almost 20 years ago as of this video's recording.
I have some time codes for segments of certain source ports if you want to skip to them:
0:00 Intro
1:02 DOSBOX
1:54 WinQuake
2:48 GLQuake
3:48 QuakeWorld (and GLQuakeWorld)
4:58 Mark V
6:02 Quakespasm
7:12 vkQuake
8:00 Quakespasm-Spiked
9:02 Darkplaces
10:23 Outro

MUSIC USED:
Trent Reznor - Intermission (Quake 1 Soundtrack)
Sonic Mayhem - B7 (from the Methods of Destruction album for Quake)
Sonic Mayhem - Ultimate Rage (from the Methods of Destruction album for Quake)
Sonic Mayhem - Premonition (from the Methods of Destruction album for Quake)
Some parts of the video come from me using out of date versions of certain ports. vkQuake in particular has been updated quite a bit since I first downloaded it (the version I downloaded was used in this video.) It now can run above 72 FPS without the physics messing up. The water bug is also in other ports too. The wonders of hardware acceleration!
